Joan Chen

As a designer and educator, Joan is drawn to close observation of the landscape through field work, and drawing as a tool for thinking through and communicating design. She is especially passionate about teaching introductory design to students from a wide range of backgrounds and exploring visual representation in landscape architecture through hybrid methods and as an iterative, layered process. She has previously taught in the Harvard GSD Design Discovery summer program and at Iowa State University, where she co-taught the traveling Savanna Studio for two years. Joan holds a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from MIT and a Master in Landscape Architecture from Harvard GSD. She enjoys cycling and watercolor painting en plein air.
