Landscape Lifecycles
Renewed Principles for Waste in Urban Landscape Design
“Waste is a cultural condition. Exploitative resource consumption and unfettered waste production are causing water, food, climate and ecological crises. Attitudes motivate actions and behaviors. This chapter is a primer for waste and its impacts on urban landscapes and describes a needed shift in human attitudes toward waste: from burden to asset. After unraveling histories, contexts and approaches toward waste and its reuse, a set of renewed principles for waste in design are offered, which establish the framework for ‘landscape lifecycles’ as an approach to design research that prioritizes waste transformation in all stages and lives of a project.”
