Pre-Orientation & Orientation

As written in your acceptance letters, there will be a Pre-Orientation program (Sept. 13-14; 17-21) for all incoming BLA and MLA students. This required course will cover hand drawing and digital media. The fee covers instruction, facilities, and computer resources.

Please respond to the following items by the dates indicated:

Please register and submit your USD payment online at by Tuesday, September 4th. Those of you who have requested waivers from certain sections have already been notified.

2. UW NetID

This is the “User Name” that you will use to log-on to the computers and access many programs at UW. Most of you already have your email addresses, but if you don’t yet have a UW NetID, please set this up before Tuesday, September 4th. You’ll need your student number and Private Access Code (found in your UW Welcome Packet), before logging on here: You can also call the Registration office at 206-543-8580.

Your UW email address is how we will primarily get in touch with you regarding any Department /Course information – be sure to check it regularly, or set your UW email to forward to a more active account.

You will want to setup your Husky Card Student ID. Your U-PASS (bus pass) is embedded in your HuskyCard. You can get your Husky Card at the ByGeorge Cafe below Odegaard Library. All registered students are automatically enrolled for a Fall Quarter U-Pass (it will appear on your tuition statement). Keep in mind that your U-Pass will only work starting 9/19, if you register for classes by Monday 9/17. If you are partaking in Hand Drawing, see below for Field Trip Transportation before 9/13…

Activate your U-Pass by tapping your HuskyCard on an ORCA reader at any bus or light rail station. Your HuskyCard will also be programmed as a keycard so you can access the studio facilities and Gould + Architecture Hall after academic hours.

This program includes field trips, but transportation costs are NOT covered with registration. You can chose to travel together via Metro bus with the Student Assistant, or you may wish to travel on your own via other methods. You may want to chose one, or a combination of these methods based on your travel needs.

• Method I: EARLY START U-Pass – Since the Fall Quarter U-Pass doesn’t start working until 9/19, the Early Start U-Pass covers the days of our Program, and is prorated based on when you purchase it. If you can get to the Transportation Services building on Tuesday 9/11, this could be your best option.

See more info about Early Fall Start U-Pass here (unless you have a Summer U-Pass, which will remain valid).

Since you need to purchase your U-Pass 2 days in advance, please proceed as follows:
• If you wish to ride the bus to Cowen Park (also a short bike ride), please purchase your pass on 9/11 for $37.50.

• Method II: CASH – You’ll need $1 bills and quarters for the bus – $2.75 depending on your home base. (this method does hold up the line of passengers…).

• Method III: ORCA card – Keep in mind an empty ORCA card costs $5, and would be redundant when your U-Pass kicks in on 9/19. You can sign-up in advance, or go to a vending machine and fill an ORCA card with the amount you’ll need throughout the 3 trips.

ORCA LIFT is a new reduced transit fare that you may qualify for if you apply in time.

Please contact Vanessa at if you need additional assistance deciding which method would work best for your travel needs.

In General:

•  pack a lunch
•  tissues (to wipe charcoal from your hands)
•  good walking shoes for field trip days
•  USB thumbdrive with your name on it
