In Adapt & Grow, @katiewu0616 shows how UBNA—the second largest surviving natural ecosystem along the shores of Lake Washington—can both absorb and process massive amounts of #compost and mitigate #stormwater runoff through impervious surfaces while retaining iconic native #wetland habitat and rustic charm. She layers ecological services and systems with human experience through both recreational and educational opportunities. #WASLA Merit Award 2019

This ecological systems studio challenged students to design for management of unmanageable change at UWs Union Bay Natural Area, a former landfil. The speculative challenge for this project exchanged contaminated soil for abundant stormwater. @kdoersch ‘s primary ecological goal in Field Notes from the Future (WASLA Merit Award 2019) was to retain stormwater from the Seattle campus, while the main educational goal was to create varied wetland habitats for students and the public to use as living classrooms. Her proposal shows how both can be achieved through reimagining a vernal pool and reshaping the shoreline. As stormwater moves through the system, some would infiltrate the water table and some would evaporate; along the way, debris and toxins would be filtered out in the ponds

Holman Grove Street Festivals this summer are part of the Leap Frogging the Right-of-Way Grant (from the Bullitt Foundation) pilot in Crown Hill—also supported by a Seattle Neighborhood Matching Fund Grant. Thaisa Way, AP Hurd and Barbara Swift lead this grant, with Rachel Berney and Julie Johnson involved.

Julie and AP are working with City staff and Crown Hill Village Association leaders to foster a new “ civic heart” for Crown Hill through these street festivals with food and market, and featuring bands (June), street painting (July), and a movie night (August). Removing street parking for a pedestrian plaza with edible plantings in planters and in a triangle of ROW are pending SDOT approval.

If you’re looking to join the fun, come August 29, 4:30 pm + for a makers market, food truck, music, and Jurassic Park screening at 8:00 pm!
